i:protect Gadget Insurance is designed to cover far more than just a laptoop or the UK's favourite gadget, a mobile phone. Look at the list below, do you own any of these valuable gadgets that can breakdown or be so easily damaged or stolen??
Blackberry, Bluetooth Headsets, Camcorders, Cameras, Handheld TV's, Laptops, Mobile Phones, MP3/Ipods, Palmtops, PDAs, Personal CD/Mini Disk Players, Portable DVD Players, Portable Media Centres (MP4), Portable Radio/Cassette/CD players and Satellite Navigation Equipment.
i:protect Gadget Insurance covers you where some Home Insurance policies fall short or would charge you extra. Check your Household Insurance carefully to see if it covers you for 'Personal Belongings insurance away from the home' or All Risks Cover. If it does you will usually find that:
- Most Home Insurance will not cover breakdown
- The excess charged on Home Insurance is often so high it is not worth claiming
The excess on your i:protect Gadget Insurance policy is only £20
This policy covers you for:
- Accidental Damage, including liquid damage (worth checking, as this is an exclusion on some gadget policies)
- Theft
- Breakdown
- If stolen, cover for mobile phones includes up to £1000 unauthorised calls
Why Laptop PLUS?
We found many people simply did not appreciate the value for money offered by a Gadget Policy compared to the cost of buying stand-alone Laptop Insurance from a High Street retailer. The reason we have promoted this cover under the 'Laptiop PLUS' banner is illustrated by the comments from people we interviewed whilst researching this product prior to launch:
‘I can insure my laptop, iphone and Blackberry plus two other gadgets for £9.99..... that's brilliant'.
‘I can insure my phone, my lap top and ipod for £6.99, that's not much more than I am paying to just insure my phone with............. (phone company)'
‘So, the insurance company will repair or supply a new replacement of any item I insure and I only pay the first £20, is that right,..... cool'

Research by i:protect*
"My daughter's mobile cost £5.99 a month to insure on its own, why are your premiums so cheap to insure all 3 items?"
At i:protect we are asked this question in many different ways, the answer is very straightforward. The products offered by i:protect are only offered over the internet, there are no middlemen, sales agents or telephone call centre to pay for. The resultant savings are passed on to you our customers.
We interviewed parents. Many own several mobile phones and other gadgets that are used by other members of their family. Many were concerned about sons and daughters at University with expensive lap tops and mobile phones. These items are hardly likely to be lost. However the risk of theft, or the cost and inconvenience if they broke down, would create a big dent in an already stretched budget.
A claims service that offers quick replacement was something that was also not lost on students. They told us of the restrictions of the insurance offered to them living away from home, high excesses were an issue and breakdown cover simply did not feature in the regular home insurance they were offered.
Many parents we interviewed particularly liked to have separate cover for gadgets as the excess on their household policy was often £100 or more. Claiming for a £200 mobile phone was simply not viable due to many policies having no claim discounts that would be placed at risk. They explained, they would lose £100 due to their Home Policy excess and even more when their premium went up the next year. This combination made claiming on their household policy for a phone or gadget hard to justify and ultimately uneconomical.
The reason both premiums and the Gadget Policy excess are some of the lowest in the UK. This was the result of an agreement between i:protect and the underwriter following an evaluation of claims. Their expertise gained offering this type of insurance through some of the leading UK retailers, enabled i:protect to offer this low cost product exclusively on-line and direct to the public.
Other questions we were asked in the course of our research:
"Can I insure 5 phones?" In short, yes provided you own 5 phones and they are less than 3 years old when placed on cover.
"Are there restrictions on cover abroad" People who own 2 mobile phones are often reluctant to take their best one on holiday, even though this is the time when they may need its facilities most of all. The cover on the i:protect policy is precisely the same whether at home or abroad. To insure a phone plus two more gadgets such as an ipod and camera for just £6.99 a month that includes 90 days cover anywhere in the world, is a very good deal for the frequent traveller.
"I am a tenant in a shared house, I don't have home insurance, can I just insure my expensive stuff and not worry about my clothes and books?" This respondent was refering to his ipod and laptop and several portable electrical items. This illustrated there is a niche market within the UK for people that feel the market only caters for people with a house to insure. Many people in this position will buy mobile phone insurance, however they would prefer to have cover for their other expensive gadgets. The insurance for gadgets offered by i:protect meets this need at an affordable price.
